Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally
in many foods and water. Every day, minerals are added to and lost from a tooth's enamel layer through two processes,
demineralization and remineralization. Minerals are lost (demineralization)
from a tooth's enamel
layer when acids -- formed from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth --
attack the enamel. Minerals such as fluoride, calcium, and
phosphate are redeposited (remineralization) to the enamel layer from the foods
and waters consumed. Too much demineralization without enough remineralization
to repair the enamel layer leads to tooth decay.
Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by making the tooth more
resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in themouth. It also
reverses early decay. In children under 6 years of age, fluoride becomes
incorporated into the development of permanent teeth, making it difficult for
acids to demineralize the teeth. Fluoride also helps speed remineralization as
well as disrupts acid production in already erupted teeth of both children and
adults.
In What
Forms Is Fluoride Available?
As mentioned, fluoride is found in foods and in water. It can
also be directly applied to the teeth through fluoridated toothpastes andmouth rinses. Mouth rinses containing fluoride in lower strengths are
available over-the-counter; stronger concentrations require a doctor's
prescription.
A dentist in his or her office can also
apply fluoride to the teeth as a gel, foam, or varnish. These treatments
contain a much higher level of fluoride than the amount found in toothpastes
and mouth rinses. Varnishes are painted on the teeth; foams are put into a mouth
guard, which is applied to the teeth for one to four minutes; gels can be
painted on or applied via a mouth guard.
Fluoride supplements are also available as liquids and
tablets and must be prescribed by your dentist, pediatrician, or family doctor.
Are There
Risks Associated With Fluoride Use?
Fluoride is safe and effective when used as directed but can be
hazardous at high doses (the "toxic" dosage level varies based on an
individual's weight). For this
reason, it's important for parents to carefully supervise their children's use
of fluoride-containing products and to keep fluoride products out of reach of
children, especially children under the age of 6.
In addition, excess fluoride can cause defects in the tooth's
enamel that range from barely noticeable white specks or streaks to
cosmetically objectionable brown discoloration. These defects are known as fluorosisand occur
when the teeth are forming -- usually in children younger than 6 years.
Fluorosis, when it occurs, is usually associated with naturally occurring
fluoride, such as that found in well water. If you use well water and are
uncertain about the mineral (especially fluoride) content, a water sample
should be tested. Although tooth staining from fluorosis cannot be removed with
normal hygiene, your dentist may be able to lighten or remove these stains with
professional-strength abrasives or bleaches.
What Happens to the Fluoride in
Your Body?
Approximately 98 percent of the fluoride you
consume is absorbed into your blood through your gastrointestinal tract. From
there, it enters your body's tissues.
On average, about 50
percent of the fluoride you ingest each day gets excreted through your kidneys,
so kidney function is another important factor when it comes to the build-up of
fluoride and its potentially toxic effects. The remainder accumulates in your
teeth and bones,6 pineal gland,7 and other tissues—including your blood vessels, where it can
contribute to calcification.
According to a 500-page long scientific review8 by the National Research Council of the National Academies (NRC), published in 2006, fluoride is an endocrine disruptor that can affect your thyroid function9 and even your blood sugar levels.

British researchers
recently warned that 15,000 Britons may be needlessly afflicted with
hypothyroidism as a result of drinking fluoridated water.10 Thyroid dysfunction is also rampant in the US,11 so from a public health standpoint, it makes no sense whatsoever
to medicate the entire population with a drug that can either induce or
exacerbate this condition.
Even more disturbing, 43
human studies12 have linked moderately high fluoride exposures with reduced IQ in
children, and over 100 animal studies have linked it to brain damage.
Recent research13 has also linked water fluoridation with higher prevalence of ADHD.
Using a predictive model, the researchers show that every one percent increase
in the portion of the US population drinking fluoridated water in 1992 was
associated with 67,000 additional cases of ADHD 11 years later, and an
additional 131,000 cases 19 years later.

Fluoride Is an Endocrine
Disruptor
According to FAN’s Science Director, Chris
Neurath:
“Scientific and medical
research stretching back to the 1920s has shown that fluoride can affect the
thyroid. The levels of fluoride exposure known to lower thyroid function
overlap with the levels of exposure known to occur in some people drinking
artificially fluoridated water.
Hypothyroidism is a very common
disorder in the US. It can have serious adverse health effects. Reduced thyroid
function in pregnant women is linked to reduced IQ in their children.
There is accumulating evidence
that fluoride, at levels within the range fluoridated populations are exposed
to, is associated with lowered IQ. Fluoride's effect on thyroid function might
be the mechanism by which it lowers IQ.”
The article notes that
"thyroid dysfunction is a common endocrine disorder..." The first
time fluoride was labeled an endocrine disrupter was in the 2006 report6 of the National Resource
Council of the National Academies.
According to the National
Institutes of Health,7 “Research shows that endocrine
disruptors may pose the greatest risk during prenatal and early postnatal
development when organ and neural systems are forming.”
As far as we know,
promoters pushing fluoridation have never referred to this ominous label. FAN’s
study tracker8 also contains a number of
previous studies showing fluoride has a detrimental effect on thyroid health.
New IQ Study Links Fluorosis to
Neurotoxicity
There are over 100 animal experiments linking
fluoride consumption to a decrease in IQ. Thirty-one animal experiments out of
33 that investigated animal behavior also showed learning and memory problems
associated with fluoride consumption, and 43 out of 50 human studies have shown
that modest levels of fluoride negatively affect IQ. The video below features
Michael Connett of the Fluoride Action Network giving a presentation on the
mounting evidence that fluoride reduces IQ in children.
Twenty-seven of these studies were recently reviewed by a team from Harvard School of Public Health. Twenty-six of these studies showed a decrease in IQ (an average drop of 7 points), and the average fluoride level in the water for 20 of these studies was only 3.52 ppm, which is lower than the current safe drinking standard in the US for fluoride of 4.0ppm.

Knowing this, it should
come as no surprise that a new study on fluoride’s impact on IQ further proves
the neurotoxicity of the drinking water additive. This new pilot study9 in China looked at
lifetime exposure to fluoride and cognitive functions in Chinese children. It
was carried out at fluoride levels that overlap levels used in US fluoridation
programs. They didn’t measure IQ specifically in this study, but reported the
results of a very simple test: the child’s ability to repeat a sequence of
numbers both forwards and backwards.
Even children with very mild dental fluorosis performed less well
on this specific mental development test, compared to children without
fluorosis. One of the experts involved in this study was Dr. David Bellenger
who is world famous for his studies on lead’s neurotoxicity. Another co-author
was Dr. Philippe Grandjean, and in an editorial on his website Chemical Brain
Drain10 he used this study to counteract the claim from proponents that
the IQ findings were not relevant to the fluoride levels used in water
fluoridation. Grandjean writes:
“Their lifetime exposures to
fluoride from drinking water covered the full range allowed in the US. Among
the findings, children with fluoride-induced mottling of their teeth – even the
mildest forms that appears as whitish specks on the enamel – showed lower
performance on some neuropsychological tests. This observation runs contrary to
popular wisdom that the enamel effects represent a cosmetic problem only and
not a sign of toxicity. At least one of five American children has some degree
of mottling of their teeth… Prevention of chemical brain drain should be
considered at least as important as protection against caries.”
To Protect Your Health, Avoid
Fluoride
No matter which scientific
studies you examine or which population trends you view, the rational
conclusion is that fluoride's health dangers far outweigh the marginal dental
benefits it might offer. Dental caries can be effectively prevented with means other than fluoridation, thereby avoiding the adverse effects of
fluoride. It's important to realize that fluoride is a cumulative
toxin,
which over time can lead to serious health concerns, from hypothyroidism to
skeletal fluorosis and much more.
The neurological effects
are particularly disconcerting. As mentioned, 43 human studies21 now link moderately high fluoride exposures with reduced IQ. We
cannot afford to ignore such warnings! Water fluoridation needs to stop. The
question is how. Despite all the
evidence, getting fluoride out of American water supplies has been exceedingly
difficult. It's not impossible, however, as evidenced in areas that have
successfully abolished water fluoridation.
According to the late Jeff
Green, National Director of Citizens for Safe Drinking Water, a repeated theme
in the cases where communities successfully removed fluoride from their water
supply is the shifting
of the burden of proof. Rather than citizens taking on the burden of proving that
fluoride is harmful and shouldn't be added, a more successful strategy has been
to hold those making claims, and the elected officials who rely on them,
accountable for delivering proof that the specific fluoridation chemical being
used fulfills their health and safety claims, and is in compliance with all
regulations, laws, and risk assessments alreadyrequired for safe drinking
water. To learn more, please see this previous article, which discusses these strategies more
in-depth.
